The rise of the designer vagina

Genital surgery is one of the fastest growing areas of plastic surgery.

In our quest for perfection and amid a growing obsession with body image, it seems women now have a new part of the anatomy to worry about – our vaginas. Genital plastic surgery is one of the fastest-growing areas in cosmetic surgery, and one of the most popular procedures being requested – mostly by young women – is a labiaplasty.

A labiaplasty – or labial rejuvenation – is a procedure whereby the inner labia, or labia minora, get trimmed back so they look more "tucked in". The surgery is generally done under a local anaesthetic, so the patient is awake while it is being performed. The process takes around 90 minutes and you can walk out of the surgery, returning to normal activities within a few days – except for sex, which you should hold off for four to six weeks.

The reason for the rise

"There has been a huge surge in the past five years of people looking to get genital surgery, and the vast majority of these are getting a labiaplasty, vaginoplasty (vaginal tightening) or liposuction in the pelvic area or labia," says Dr Laith Barnouti, a leading Sydney plastic surgeon.

Barnouti says that currently around 20 per cent of his clients are coming in for genital surgery. The youngest to date was 14, the oldest in her mid-sixties. A 2010 report also found that the number of clinically necessary procedures – that is, not solely for cosmetic reasons – performed by private practitioners nearly doubled in recent years.

So why are women requesting this procedure? There are a few reasons, says Barnouti, including feeling "socially embarrassed… people can't wear certain types of bathers, people feel embarrassed in intimate situations". But the reasons go beyond the aesthetic, he claims.

"Labiaplasty and vaginoplasty are often performed due to a medical condition – people actually have it for a functional reason," Dr Barnouti says. "Labial hypertrophy – enlargement or sagging of the labia – can be unhealthy and unhygienic."

Vaginoplasty, which is usually performed on women who have a weakened perineum after giving birth, is a "restorative, reconstructive procedure", says Barnouti. "This is something completely different from, say, liposuction, which is a purely cosmetic procedure."

What is normal?

But are women having genital surgery for other reasons – to please a boyfriend perhaps, or because they feel their vagina is not normal? Do women actually hate the appearance of their vulvas so much that they will have parts of them surgically removed?

The 2008 UK documentary The Perfect Vagina explored the reasons why women opt for this type of surgery, and found that many do it because they've been teased by someone close to them about the way their genitals look, or have just decided their vagina looks abnormal.

In the documentary, Professor Linda Cordoza, a leading UK gynaecologist, says while women are much more aware of what's available in terms of plastic surgery procedures, it doesn't necessarily mean they know what's normal.

"There's been a huge trend towards bikini waxing, doing things with your pubic hair as well as the hair on your head. So [women think] if you can have cosmetic surgery done to your face, you can also have cosmetic surgery done on your genitals." Cordoza says.

"I sometimes get two or three generations of women in the same family coming in saying they want their labia trimmed."

The role of pornography

Our perception of what is normal is most definitely clouded by the proliferation of pornographic images featuring women with smaller, tucked in – and often heavily airbrushed – private parts.

As women, we don't often see vaginas other than our own, so if the only images we see are of highly airbrushed genitals, naturally many of us are going to assume that what we have is "different" or "abnormal".

Melinda Tankard Reist is a media commentator and author of Big Porn Inc and Getting Real – Challenging the Sexualisation of Girls (Spinifex Press). She believes pornography is a big driver in the rise in cosmetic surgery.

"Girls are made to feel inadequate and think that there's something wrong with their perfectly natural, healthy bodies. And boys are expecting girls to provide the porn star experience," Reist says.

Reist adds that it's important women pass on positive body image messages to their daughters, and that cosmetic surgeons should play their part by refusing to operate on very young women, rather than "capitalising on the body angst of girls".

Barnouti says women contemplating any type of cosmetic surgery should be doing it for themselves, not anyone else.

"What we do here is for the patient, not their partner," Barnouti says. "If you're going to have a procedure, have it for yourself. Just because someone makes a negative comment doesn't mean you should change your whole body."

Labiaplasty – the facts

The procedure: A labiaplasty takes around 90 minutes and patients are usually under twilight sedation – either local anaesthetic or IV sedation – meaning they are awake for the surgery. During the procedure the surgeon removes a wedge-shaped piece of tissue and re-attaches the labium so the inner lips no longer protrude beyond the outer lips.

The recovery: Three to four days for normal activities, including going back to work, but avoid exerting yourself physically. You can't run or jog for two weeks, and no sex for four to six weeks. The stitches used are usually dissolvable.

The cost: Labiaplasty costs around $4000 to $5000 if you have private healthcare cover, otherwise you can expect to add another $2000. To be available under Medicare it must be deemed clinically necessary.

Indecent sexual affair in the offices of the Socialist Party in Albania

Tirana, August 18, 2014/Independent Balkan News Agency

The discovery of the suspected pedophile Agron Cane, former brigadier commander

Agron Cane, a former 61 year old military officer and brigadier commander, had been part of the Socialist Party for a while. He worked at the office of MP Kokedhima in Saranda, where he used to take note of the demands coming from the citizens, mainly for jobs and complaints and he also filled the necessary documents to help them.

One of the persons who also sought help at the office of the Socialist Party was O.G, a widow, mother of four children, who suffered constant poverty in Saranda. Since the month of March, she was trying to find a job, but the secretary of the socialist MP didn’t consent to this if she didn’t offer him a sexual favor. The situation escalated when the unscrupulous official asked her to offer him his 14 year old daughter for sexual relations. He demanded to take the virginity off the young girl and engage in an orgy along with her mother in bed. The woman said that she was very upset by this, but she didn’t trust police and this is why she didn’t demand help there. A few days ago, while the situation was aggravating, she addressed to a local journalist. This marked the start of a series of registrations which revealed for the public other ugly aspects of officials who deal with the problems of the citizens.

It’s easily discerned by the conversation that the woman has had sexual relations with the pervert, but forced to do so. But, Cane was now asking for more, an orgy with the child. An outrageous part where Cane claims that next year he would run for the mayor of Saranda was this one: “I, you and the girl will all three be in bed. Under your guidance, she will be your student. So, phone her, as I’m looking forward to her. I’m obsessed by your daughter. Her friends have done this before her. I can assure you on this. She will be relieved because she has many hormones. The girl needs sex. I’m not a maniac, as I have a wife at home. I like good things and I take pleasure on doing this. I don’t want to say a lot, but if I’m elector mayor, your daughter will have a future”.

State Police reacted by arresting the suspect, Agron Cane, married, father of two children.

Kokedhima condemns the “maniac act”

The socialist MP, Kokedhima reacted after the event and said that “the ugly act and implication of Agron Cane in this story is strongly condemned”.

“We distance ourselves from such ugly perverse acts”, said Kokedhima.

In the press statement, the MP also published for the first time, the full identity of the woman who became an object of abuse in the office of the SP. Media and police had kept her name discreet.

This also shows that party offices are used for employments: “The woman who denounced this, came to our office at the start of the year in order to find a job and our office helped her to get a job at a private company in Saranda, where she worked for six months…”

Who is Kokedhima

Since the ‘90s, Koco Kokedhima became known after privatizing several state owned enterprises, thus becoming one of the biggest business people in Albania. In 1997 he entered the world of media when he founded the daily “Shekulli” newspaper, which soon became the biggest one in Albania and held this position for several years. Kokedhima also opened a national radio channel and a TV channel, and also a sport newspaper, a photographic agency, magazines, publishing houses, etc. Besides the media, he also bought a football team. During this period, he started the radio talk show called “How to become a millionaire”. Kokedhima claims that his wealth is estimated to amount to several hundred millions of Euros. Kokedhima is also known as one of the closest friends of the prime minister. Kokedhima entered politics in 2013, when he ran as an MP of the Socialist Party for the south of Albania.

Berisha: The pedophile is Kokedhima’s closest man

Former prime minister and current MP of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha says that “the pedophile Agron Cane is Kokedhima’s closest man. By using Kokedhima’s power and SP in Saranda, he asks the mother of four orphan children to offer him his daughter for sexual relations in exchange of a job”, Berisha says that after this scandal, “Rama-Kokedhima did everything with police and SP to shut the media up and end this scandal. After they failed, Rama, in violation with every law, sent Kokedhima to put pressure on the young girl during her interrogation at the police of Saranda”.

Berisha criticizes what he considers to be as Rama’s silence: “Although in this super scandal everything had developed the same as in horror films, Rama keeps quiet to convey a message to socialists and common citizens that this is his model of employment and solution to their problems”.

Rama: Evil has no place among us

Immediately after this, prime minister Edi Rama reacted on this event. He stresses the fact that police arrested the suspect and that the office of MP Kokedhima categorically distanced itself. Rama said that the 61 year old was expelled from the Socialist Party, by adding: “For us, evil has no party and no place among us”.

MPs, active in condemning the scandal

MP Albina Deda says that “one must offer money or sexual favors, or to have a serious previous conviction to get a job”, adding: “It’s clear that the state offices, the offices of the Socialist Party have turned into offices of abuse and perversity”.

MP Alban Zeneli says that this phenomenon has turned into a system: “Kokedhima’s assistant, who demands sexual favors from the minor in exchange of a job, is the creature of a system established by Edi Rama”. According to him, “the entire society is irritated and has raised its voice for the dirty stuff taking place in the office of the Socialist Party”.

Analysts offer their insights

Analyst Andi Bushati says that “the terrible scenes of a 61 year old who asks to have sex with a minor in the offices of the Socialist Party, are not only an object of anger for thousands of hopeless unemployed people, who live on the verge of poverty, who want a job and more opportunities in life, but it’s also a reflection of the situation in which we’re in, a great moment of reflection which tells us about our society, for its darkest side and for the weak links that tie the relations between this society with the people that govern it.”

Bushati says that “that part of the declaration issued by Kokedhima, which talks about the woman that has denounced this story, is outrageous. In a perverse manner, the woman’s name is revealed, something which has been done neither by police, nor by the media. They “forget” that she’s the mother of four children, who lives in a small town, where everyone knows everyone. In a more disgusting manner, the declaration says that the woman has been found a job by the SP office before. What does this mean: that she has found the job based on the services that she has offered (a low insinuation)? Or is this being done to show that even now, after the event, with more publicity and attention, people must continue to knock in the local offices of the SP because they can solve their problems there?”.

Analyst, Mero Baza, criticizes the regards that Kokedhima shows for the past of the pedophile and suggests: “Kokedhima should have denounced the crime after he was made aware and hand the criminal to police. After this, he should have offered a strong public apology, not because he was guilty, but because he was responsible for the people that he imposed upon us to govern our fate. The citizens of Saranda have not voted the pervert, neither his career as a military man or his vices as a pedophile, but the Socialist Party. Today, they have no explanation why their party trusted the fate of the citizens to a pervert. Nevertheless, the only thing that makes sense is the public apology. It’s a sign of humbleness and unification with the revolted citizens. The justification with his past as an officer, causes more irritation”.

Baze says that the scandal reveals how power is executed in the Socialist Party’s base. “Power is delegated to several informal offices, which receive letters and complaints and use them for personal power. The scandal turns down what the government has claimed about recruitments at the party’s base, standards of recruitment and quality of those who recruit. The pervert was not an employee of a job center in Saranda, but an employ of Koco’s office, who formally is a volunteer without pay, but who has more power than whoever works in job offices”.

Baze further suggests that “Koco Kokedhima is not to be blamed why a sexual pervert was found among the voluntaries, but he’s responsible for delegating power in an informal way, outside the structures of the state. We have job offices for employment, we have the municipality for complaints and we have police to report corruption… The parallel state of the MP is the start of the problem which fuels the courage to abuse up to this level of perversity”.

Publicist Nidela Hoxha Zenuni told IBNA that “every day we have to deal with such people, in work premises and everywhere else”. “Under the disguise of a normal man, who is often presented as a good man, lie scary monstrosities and perversities”. The publicist says that “pedophiles of such dimensions who circulate in high levels of society, show a high level of sophisticated criminality, and at the same time, an ordinary one”. /ibna/

How men from Africa and Asia can easily migrate to Europe: Western African route

The route between Senegal, Mauritania and Morocco and the Spanish Canary Islands was once the busiest irregular entry point for the whole of Europe, peaking at 32 000 migrants arriving on the islands in 2006.

But the numbers dropped by 60 per cent in 2007 following bilateral agreements between Spain and Senegal and Mauritania, including repatriation agreements. Strengthened border controls, including the installation of the SIVE maritime surveillance system, also helped, along with the Frontex-coordinated Operation Hera.

Migrants on this route were mostly from Morocco and Senegal, with others from Niger, Nigeria and Mali. They generally travelled in long wooden fishing boats, known as cayucos; migrants from Morocco use smaller fishing boats called pateras.

The numbers continued to drop from 2007, until by 2012 there were just 170 arrivals in the Canaries. The figure remained stable for the next two years, although it rose to 874 in 2015.

The Moroccan smuggler operation is not well developed. Sea passages tend to be arranged by individuals working independently, serving clients who have made their own way to the coast rather than using the services of organised networks. Small boats found on Lanzarote containing very small numbers of migrants gave strong indications that drug smuggling was the primary goal of these journeys.

EXPAT TRAGEDY First pics of Brit couple found hanged in Cambodia ‘alongside suicide note blaming NHS for their mental health problems’

The couple were named locally by expats as Robert Goldie-Wells, 36, from Sunderland and his wife Imogen, 28, from South London, who died on her birthday

The Sun

A BRIT couple have been found dead in Cambodia after killing themselves in an apparent suicide pact.

The tragic lovers left a note blaming the NHS for “constantly letting [them] down”.

They were named locally by expats as Robert Goldie-Wells, 36, from Sunderland and his wife Imogen, 28, from South London, who died on her birthday.

The pair are believed to have been discovered by friends in the Cambodian seaside town of Sihanouville.

The note found with their bodies also described the couple’s struggle with mental health issues.

Video footage taken from the scene appeared to show rope that had been tied to the bars of an outside window.

Trends in cosmetic procedures may vary globally depending on ethnic preferences, but the fundamentals of health and beauty are universal

RACONTEUR

Some 20 million surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures were performed worldwide in 2014, according to latest figures from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) which has more than 2,700 certified surgeons in 95 countries. Not a huge surprise that it was women who committed to the knife, needle and beam, with ISAPS reporting more than 17 million cosmetic surgeries globally, representing 86.3 per cent of the total. For non-surgical cosmetic procedures, Botox was top of the list for both men and women.

So what is everyone having done? Breast augmentation has the highest global tally among women, with liposuction second and eyelid reduction (blepharoplasty) the most popular surgery for men.

Women are opting for ‘mummy makeovers’, where two or three cosmetic surgery procedures are performed in one operation

North America still leads the way with more than four million procedures carried out every year. An American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) 2014 survey showed 286,254 breast augmentations were performed. And 24.7 per cent of all Botox procedures in the world are in America.

Is the choice of procedures determined by geography? “What women and men are looking for in terms of cosmetic surgery does vary according to where they live,” says Martha McCully, an American beauty expert and founding beauty director of Allure magazine. “In New York City, youth-enhancing cosmetic surgery is popular. The standard is an eye lift performed in the doctor’s office, or neck or breast lift.” Ms McCully adds that there are “tribes” of different looks across the United States. “So if the look in Manhattan Beach, California, is to have perky but not large breasts, then there will be an awful lot of 40-somethings getting similar implants,” she says. “Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Malibu seem to show it off a little more than New Yorkers, in my opinion. On the Upper East Side of New York, if women don’t work but they want to maintain a look, they are going to the same surgeons for their eye lifts and breast lifts.”

On the other side of the world, there are a lot of people seeking non-surgical cosmetic solutions for sun damage and pigmentation problems, according to Shonagh Walker, a beauty journalist, based in Sydney. “Increasingly, women are opting for ‘mummy makeovers’, where two or three cosmetic surgery procedures are performed in one operation,” she says.

Globally we are now seeing the influence of new technologies and procedures, along with social and cultural influences, that have led to particular trends emerging. Iranians want rhinoplasty, Brazilians go for buttock enhancements, Germany has the most penile enlargement surgeries worldwide and in South Korea there is a trend to have a baby face combined with a womanly body (so-called bagel girls – baby faced and glamorous). And it is worth noting that more than a third of South Korean 20-somethings have had a cosmetic procedure of some sort.

Cosmetic surgery expert Wendy Lewis, who advises clients worldwide on cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures, says: “The internet is the great beauty equaliser for research, but ethnic traits are considered to be beautiful. In South Korea women look to reduce their cheekbones, using Botox to create a slimmer jaw line; in China women use Botox to reduce the circumference of their calves and in Japan nasal implants are still popular.”

UK consultant plastic surgeon Simon Withey adds: “Twenty years ago it seemed there was a strong tendency for patients to request ‘Westernisation’ of features. Now patients are much more likely to identify with someone with similar ethnicity, but whose features they prefer to their own.”

Consultant plastic surgeon and founder of London clinic Cadogan Cosmetics, Bryan Mayou, who performed the first liposuction procedure in the UK 32 years ago at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, says he sees global patterns.

“There is a pattern and it changes not just on cultural grounds, but also on grounds of availability,” he says. “If a new procedure becomes available then people think they have a problem. For example, when it comes to using fillers in lips people didn’t realise they had small lips until there was a means of making them fuller.

“In terms of different nationalities, the Iranians in my view have splendid large, refined noses and look aristocratic, but many of them want a hump reduced. Middle Eastern men are more concerned now with their looks and want eyelifts, plus they tend to be pot-bellied and want liposuction.

“With my female Indian patients, the abdomen is bared in their clothing so that becomes a focus with many wanting liposuction. I see a lot of Russian girls who want bits of liposuction and breast surgery – many are newly divorced so they come in to get their confidence back. We also get a few Chinese clients who say they don’t trust Chinese surgeons.”

In terms of procedures worldwide, Brazil is second after the US. Buttock augmentation (gluteoplasty) is a national obsession and of the 319,960 procedures performed globally in 2013, 63,925 were by Brazilian surgeons, according to ISAPS. They even have a beauty contest called Miss BumBum and procedures are tax deductible based upon their ability to enhance mental and physical wellbeing. The public are intrigued by what their favourite star may or may not have had done

South Korea is ranked as having the highest number of cosmetic surgery procedures per capita globally. Double eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is popular to create bigger and wider eyes. Jaw reshaping and rhinoplasty is also sought after. Cosmetic surgery clinics in Seoul have names such as Small Face, Wannabe and Magic Nose.

Germany has perhaps the most surprising cosmetic surgery trend with ISAPS figures showing 2,786 penis enlargement treatments were performed in 2013, which was significantly more than in any other country. Venezuela was second with just 473 procedures.

Tehran is often cited as the world’s “nose job capital” and in 2014 Iran was among countries with the highest number of rhinoplasty procedures per capita globally. “Around 200,000 rhinoplasties are performed every year in Iran, with a view to create a dainty slightly up-turned tip,” says Sultan Hassan, medical director of Elite Surgical. “It is almost regarded as an indicator of elevated social status with documented accounts of patients wearing their nasal splints long after the week recommended.”

But recently state-run Iranian television announced it wouldn’t use actors in films and TV shows if it was obvious they had undergone cosmetic surgery. However, according to Mr Hassan: “The public are intrigued by what their favourite star may or may not have had done. There is a relation between socio-economic affluence and celebrity media awareness with demand for cosmetic surgery.”

Cosmetic surgery adviser Ms Lewis concludes that despite some regional variations, the basics of what is considered attractive do not differ that much globally. “Healthy, even toned skin is considered beautiful no matter where you live,” she says. “Plus, women everywhere are still bothered about carrying extra weight on their tummies, waist, hips and thighs. For men, it is always more about good hair and a slim waistline.

Sadomasochist accused of strapping woman to 'torture board' and sending 240 volts through vagina CLEARED of sexual assault

Mirror

A self-confessed sadomasochist accused of strapping a woman to a 'torture board' and sending 240 volts through her vagina has been cleared of sexual assault.

Road worker Keiren Batten, 43, was "obsessed with sadomasochistic sexual practices", a jury was told.

Prosecutor Simon Wilshire told them he "used" a 27-year-old woman "to satisfy his physical, dangerous sexual desires re bondage, sadism and restraint."

Batten stood trial on one count of sexual assault which related to the incident involving his homemade electric torture board.

The complainant claimed he attached crocodile clips to her labia while she was strapped to the restraint board he had made from plywood and pet collars and belts.

In his defence, Batten, from Hitchin, Herts, told a jury in fact it was he who had submitted to painful sexual practices.

He denied having electrocuted the complainant via her vagina.

He also claimed his own genitals had been left scarred after the woman used a blowtorch on them and that she also carved her name into his thigh with a Stanley knife.

A jury cleared Batten of sexual assault and another count of assault relating to an accusation he had pushed the woman during an argument.

Jurors could not come to a verdict on a charge of assault relating to a head butt.

Prosecutors have a week to decide whether to retry Batten on the matter.

During the trial at Cambridge Crown Court, the jury of seven woman and five men were asked to join the judge and barristers to examine to homemade torture board.

Defence barrister Neil Fitzgibbon asked Batten to lie down on the board in court and strap himself to it using the head, body, arm and leg collars, belts and chain.

Judge Farrell came down from his bench to stand with barristers and jurors to examine Batten's demonstration on the floor of the court.

Jurors were also shown explicit photographs of Batten's genitals bearing the branding and burn marks.

The complainant told the court she went along with some of the kinky sex because Batten said she was "boring" in bed.

Twice she was electrocuted through her nipples.

But, she claimed Batten on another occasion connected the lead to her vagina although she had said he must not.

"He put the crocodile clips inside, attached to my labia, and shocked me," she said.

"He turned it on and I just caught my breath because you think you are going to die.

"I have never experienced anything so hideous in my life.

"I never went on the board again.

"After that 'I was rubbish in bed' and 'everybody else was better', 'I was just a prude'."

The witness said: "He calls it a torture and it is torture really.

"As I got a bit braver I said no and that's when he got bored and went elsewhere."

In cross-examination, she accepted she carved her name with a Stanley knife into his inner thigh, but denied she used a blowtorch or the shocker on him.

Batten had earlier pleaded guilty to criminally damaging a mobile phone and taking a hammer to a wall at the complainant's home and has been remanded in custody to be sentenced for those offences on 2 May.

Porn, prostitution will be rampant if women allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia: Report

Toronto Sun

Allowing women to drive in Saudi Arabia would cause rampant sex, porn and homosexuality, according to some of the country's scholars.

Academics at the country's highest religious council submitted a report to the legislative assembly warning of the dangers of letting women behind the wheel, reports the Daily Telegraph.

If the only country in the world that still bans women from driving were to change its rules, there would be "a surge in prostitution, pornography, homosexuality and divorce."

Within 10 years of the ban being lifted, the report claimed, there would be "no more virgins" in the country, according to the paper.

Currently, women caught driving in the kingdom may be lashed as punishment.
